Thomas O’Sullivan


Known to be a highly talented, results-driven, and accomplished senior lawyer, Tom offers more than 25 years of experience in developing, implementing, and managing the provision of legal services across diverse industries, both in Canada and internationally. Tom is a former exploration geologist, with a Bachelors of Science in Geology and Economics, who was called to the Alberta bar in 1993 after obtaining his JD. 

Tom is effective, practical, and professional with demonstrated success developing constructive relationships and navigating complex issues involving multiple stakeholders. He has extensive experience working effectively with government and other regulatory bodies and providing executive management in resource-based services.

Tom has most recently worked in the energy industry providing executive counsel support to a non-operated international resource-based joint venture partner that resulted in the single largest, private investment made in Canadian history. He brings to MerGen Law his extensive experience in corporate/commercial, regulatory, and stakeholder matters. The global joint venture partners ultimately chose to sanction the LNG project taking a final investment decision 

As a commissioned officer in the Canadian Armed Forces, Tom is inclined to be a collaborative facilitative leader that is devoted to motivating, mentoring, and enabling others to accomplish the mission professionally and ethically, while developing or improving capabilities to mission outcome success.

Tom is active in the community, sitting on boards for not-for-profit organizations, coaching hockey at the Junior level with Hockey Canada and through the Faculty of Kinesiology at the University of Calgary. In his leisure time, Tom is an active mountaineer in the Canadian Cordillera, Alaska, and Karakoram areas, and is a certified outdoor alpine instructor.
