From Aspirations to Accomplishments: Davud’s Journey to Canadian Citizenship and Legal Practice

Posted by MerGen Law | Mar 18, 2025 | 0 Comments

Becoming a Canadian citizen is a milestone that brings a profound sense of belonging, freedom, and opportunity. For Davud Camgoz, an articling student at MerGen Law, it is also a testament to perseverance, hard work, and unwavering commitment to his goals. His story is one of resilience and growth. This journey reflects not only his aspirations as a lawyer but also his integration into Canadian society.

The Path to Citizenship

When Davud moved to Canada six years ago, he didn't initially envision staying long-term. As an international student, he faced unique challenges: navigating a new city, paying triple the tuition fees of domestic students, and living with the constant uncertainty surrounding his residency status. Yet, over time, Canada became home.

“Becoming a citizen felt like the worries disappeared,” Davud reflects. “I'm part of society and the community now. It's not just about the passport, but about belonging.”

The benefits of Canadian citizenship are undeniable. With a Canadian passport, he now has the freedom to travel to numerous countries and access opportunities across the Commonwealth, including places like the United Kingdom. While citizenship hasn't drastically altered his professional life in Canada, it has opened doors globally and brought peace of mind.

The citizenship ceremony was a significant experience for Davud. Swearing allegiance to his new home country before a judge symbolized his integration into Canadian society. “It's a deeply meaningful moment,” he shares. “Taking the oath and becoming part of the community changes you. It's a new chapter.”

Overcoming Challenges on the Path to Law

Davud's legal journey began in Turkey, where he studied law and experienced firsthand the significant political and economic challenges that shaped the country. Midway through his studies, constitutional changes and political instability in Turkey led him to reconsider his future.

Davud faced significant challenges with practicing law in Turkey, particularly due to the strong political influence on the legal system. When he arrived in Canada, he initially didn't consider pursuing law at first.

Instead, he took a break to recalibrate. Working part-time at a grocery store and grappling with the language barrier, Davud enrolled at SAIT (Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) and earned a diploma in business administration. While working at a bank, he learned about the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA), which evaluates the credentials of internationally trained lawyers in Canada. Realizing his legal education in Turkey could be recognized in Canada, he decided to renew his commitment to the field of law.

“The NCA process was very valuable to me,” Davud says. He enrolled at the University of Calgary to complete the necessary courses to bridge the gap between civil law (practiced in Turkey) and common law (practiced in Canada). The transition wasn't without challenges, but Davud's determination never ceased.

Thriving at MerGen Law

As an articling student at MerGen Law, Davud has found the perfect environment to grow and hone his skills. The firm's forward-thinking approach to the legal profession initially attracted him.

“MerGen Law is not a traditional firm,” Davud explains. “They actively embrace technology, using tools like AI and cloud-based systems to improve efficiency. It's exciting to be part of a team constantly looking for innovative ways to practice law.”

The firm's culture has also significantly contributed to his positive experience. MerGen Law fosters a collaborative and supportive environment where articling students can work closely with partners. “There are no barriers here,” Davud says. "I can approach the partners anytime; they're very open and friendly.”

One of the most memorable moments at MerGen Law was how the team celebrated his citizenship milestone. The office was decorated, and a celebratory lunch featuring Canadian classics like poutine and maple syrup was organized. Davud dressed in a tuxedo to mark the momentous occasion. “It's those moments that make you feel valued,” he shares.

Learning and Growing Through Articling

Articling at MerGen Law has been both challenging and rewarding for Davud. He's had opportunities to handle cases and appear before judges, experiences many articling students might not have until later in their careers. One such moment was his first contested hearing, where he argued a case before a judge despite his limited experience.

“I was nervous, but it taught me that preparation is everything,” Davud recalls. “Even if you're stressed, taking it one step at a time helps you stay composed. That experience gave me confidence.”

Among the many lessons he's learned, one stands out: the importance of listening. “Being a good listener is crucial in law,” he notes. “Taking thorough notes and letting clients talk not only builds trust but also ensures you don't miss any details.”

Inspiration from Family

Davud's journey is deeply inspired by his grandfather, who immigrated to Turkey during the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire. Starting with nothing, his grandfather built a successful business from the ground up, selling eggs on the streets before expanding into furniture and real estate.

“My grandfather is my role model,” Davud says. “He came from nothing and established himself through hard work and resilience. Moving to Canada, I feel like I'm following in his footsteps.”

Advice for Aspiring Lawyers

Davud's advice is simple yet profound for those considering a similar path: “Don't give up. It will take longer than you expect, and there will be setbacks. Focus on the immediate task in front of you rather than worrying about the big picture.”

Looking Ahead

As Davud nears the completion of his articling term, he's optimistic about the future. With just a few months left before he's called to the bar, he reflects on how far he's come—from navigating life as a newcomer in Canada to becoming an integral part of MerGen Law's team and a proud Canadian citizen.

Davud's journey reminds us that resilience, determination, and a supportive environment can turn aspirations into achievements. His story inspires future lawyers and anyone striving to overcome challenges and make a meaningful impact in their chosen field.
